Socal Mailing Lists

There are two separate lists:
  • hash-l, the world wide list, and
  • hashsc-l Southern California only stuff
You can expect to get anywhere from 20 to 50 messages a day on hash-l and 0-5 messages a day on hashsc-l. The content varies widely (what else would you expect of hashers?). You can arrange to get each message individually as it is posted, or to receive one large digest each day with all of the day's messages.

The examples below all use hashsc-l. You should substitute hash-l if you want to be on that list. See below for information on how to check which lists you're on and how to subscribe or unsubscribe to a list. Southern California hashers should be on hashsc-l to get local run announcements, etc. They may also want to be on hash-l.

The lists are handled by a list processor. A list processor is an email-handling program which automatically takes care of details like adding or removing subscribers and sending messages to all the subscribers of a list. This means that no human being will read your messages before sending them on.

Important: there are 3 separate email addresses: one for subscription requests and one each for posting to the lists. Don't be a wanker and send your subscription requests to everybody on the whole list. Anything having to do with your subscription (unsubscribing, changing mail options, etc) needs to be sent to:

listproc@usc.edu
Mail that you want to send to all hashers needs to be sent to:
hash-l@usc.edu and/or hashsc-l@usc.edu

Subscribing

If you want to join a list, send mail to listproc@usc.edu. Leave the subject line of the mail empty and include the following line in the body of the mail:
subscribe hashsc-l your name
You don't need to include anything else in the message. Remember to substitute hash-l if you want to be on that list. You can sign up for both lists at the same time by including both commands:
subscribe hash-l your name
subscribe hashsc-l your name

It is helpful if you supply your name as Firstname "Hashname" Lastname.

When you first subscribe you will get each message on the list as soon as it is sent. If you would rather get a digest once a day with all of the day's mail, see the section on switching to digest mode

Unsubscribing

If you want to unsubscribe from a list, send mail to listproc@usc.edu. Leave the subject line of the mail empty and include the following line in the body of the mail:
unsubscribe hashsc-l
You don't need to include anything else in the message. Remember to substitute hash-l if you are on that list.

Posting a Message to a List

To send a message to all hashers on the hash-l list, send your mail to:
hash-l@usc.edu
If the message is only of interest to Southern California people (e.g. a local run announcement), you should send it just to the hashers on the hashsc-l list by mailing to:
hashsc-l@usc.edu

Switching to Digest Mode

Digest mode will send you one (big) mail message per day (usually late evening) with all of the messages that have been posted to the list that day.

To switch to digest mode send mail to listproc@usc.edu with this command in the body of the message:

set hashsc-l mail digest

Switching to Individual Messages Mode

This is the default mail setting when you first subscribe to a list. If you have been on digest mode and want to switch back to receiving individual messages, send mail to listproc@usc.edu with this command in the body of the message:
set hashsc-l mail ack
If you don't want to receive copies of the messages that you send to the list, you can replace ack with noack.

Other useful commands

There are several other useful commands that the list processor software understands. To execute any of these, send mail to listproc@usc.edu (as usual) with one (or more) of these commands in the body of the message. Get the help file first if you would like more information. If you are on the hash-l, substitute that for hashsc-l in the examples below.
help
Sends a help file with lots of useful information.
recipients hashsc-l
Sends you a list of all the subscribers to the list.
query hashsc-l
Lists options you have currently selected.
which
Sends you a list of all the email lists you are subscribed to on this list server.
